Have you been pondering ways to make your kid's room an enchanting space for them? At home, my girls' room is definitely my favorite room in the house and it’s because of a few creative tricks I’ve honed over the years. I’m excited to share my top five kids room decor tricks with you today…
1. Self-Guided Gallery
Give your children a roll of painters' tape and the freedom to turn a blank wall into a gallery of their own creation. This self-guided wall decor allows them to express their creativity and adds a deeply personal touch to their space. School artwork, family photos, notes from friends—you may be suprised by what they cherish and choose to display. It's an ever-evolving art exhibit right in their bedroom. Plus, rest assured, painters' tape is safe for most types of paint and wallpaper.
2. Magical Lighting
Create a cozy atmosphere with string lights, a glowing moon lamp, or even a starry projector. In our girls’ room, we attached globe lights to a clapper (remember those!?) which adds a fun exclaimation point to “lights out!”
3. Bedtime Story Corner
A cozy corner with a few pillows and a fuzzy rug (or blanket) is a great place to let kiddos start the bedtime process, especially with their favorite wind-down books within easy reach. Fill a basket or bookshelf exclusively with choice of “turn down” books (parents, you know exactly what I mean when I say there are “turn up” books and you dread them at bedtime). Pro-tip: Only include as many books as you're willing to read in one night—I call this my Halo Top strategy—and rotate the books every few nights to keeps things fresh and make bedtime an exciting part of their day.
4. Balanced “Bonkers” Bedding
If you’re an aesthetic-mama like me, buy a solid color duvet and one set of stripe or gingham pillowcases, then let your little one go bananas with character sheets, pillows, stuffies, and more! It keeps things cute and super kid-friendly, plus it’s easy to swap out sheets during the holidays (if you’re into that kind of thing) or when their taste changes.
These are some of my current favorites, if you’re looking for some shopping inspo…
5. DIY Dream Catcher
Making a dream catcher together is such a fun and easy craft project. Hang them above the bed to capture sweet dreams (and ward off bad ones). This is a great tutorial from Mallory at Tribal Trade’s YouTube channel—you should check it out! I think you should always learn about Indigenous practices like this from people who are part of the culture and Mallory’s channel is an amazing resource. After that, if you’re looking for more inspiration, there are lots of other tutorials to reference on Pinterest (two of my faves, above).
