If you want to learn how to make green beer without food coloring, there’s a trick you might want to know. Turn your favorite drink into a fun St. Patrick’s Day treat in seconds…
My hatred for St. Patrick’s Day has been well-documented despite the fact that I’m mostly Irish and my name is Erin (literally “Ireland” in gaelic). But damn it, I live for a season holiday so let’s turn our drinkie drinks green!!
The trick here is Green Rock Candy! And yes before you come for me, I know rock candy is tinted with food coloring but this seems less gross to me than squeezing in liquid food coloring, plus the candy sticks look so beautiful and festive in your glass!
I purchased these from Amazon (6 lollipops for less than $10) so if you’re looking to host a last-minute Saint Patrick’s Day celebration—you’re in luck with next day delivery. I was really impressed with the quality of these candies; no damaged lollipops, and the flavor and color were beautiful.
But does it change the taste of your beer? No.
The most common question: Will this change the taste of your beer? The short answer is no. I’ve tested this with a few different beers and candies, each time the flavor of the rock candy (ie. green apple, lime, pear) disappears completely and you’re only left with a little added sweetness. If you’ve ever had a red or green Berliner Weisse, it’s a similar taste.
You can use this trick on other drinks, too! My daughters and I tried the same rock candy trick using apple juice and I think it worked even better! They loved this—such a fun “experiment” to do together.
